Web + Mobile + Search + Social in Minneapolis MN

All posts tagged mobile web design

There are a couple of events going on right now, each on a different scale in size and web design.  In my opinion, one is a fantastic web design, the other is completely a waste of clicks.

The 2010 Winter Olympics Web Design – Gold Medal
The Vancouver 2010 web design is a wonderful mix of colors, theme, layout and tons of content. Photos, events, video, interviews, medal counts and so much more. It captures the energy of the games while easing interaction will all of the events and stories.

My only critique of this web design would be the left alignment.  It just makes a site feel crowded and crammed to me.  I get what they were trying to leverage with the design elements to the right, but they should have stayed true to center alignment.  Here is another post full of great Olympic design examples.

The Minneapolis Home & Garden Show – DNQ
Locally, the Minneapolis Home & Garden Show event kicked off today and this web design is about as lame, boring and unfriendly as it gets.  It gets the Did Not Qualify award for not being worthy of finishing the race.  I’m sure the Home & Garden Show is very interested in bringing in as many attendees as possible, but this website won’t motivate a soul to get off their couch.

I could even forgive the poor web design if the content was solid, but that’s a whole different kind of fail.  How about some photos or videos from past shows (non distorted please).  Show me what the experience is.  Let me know about concrete deck builders, granite fabricators or tree care specialists.

Now only if I could say I was going to attend both events this weekend.

Google announced new features for Google Analytics today that add to their web stats service.  The two additions I liked most are further goal tracking options and mobile website tracking.

  • Engagement Goals: Track goals that are set for the amount of time on your website as well as pages per visit. Best of all they have expanded the number of goals you can track to 20.

  • Mobile Website Tracking: Google Analytics now tracks mobile websites and mobile apps (iPhone & Android) so you can better measure your mobile marketing efforts and mobile content. Need a mobile website designed? We can help.

Check out the full post for all of the new enhancements, there are quite a few.

We’ve finally released version 1.0 of the Five Technology website to the mobile web. There is still some work and testing to do for sure.

We’ve set-up mobile browser detection to automatically forward mobile device users to the http://m.fivetechnology.com mobile sub domain when accessing the site.  Fun little project and just the start of quite a bit of mobile web design from us.

Our web design firm is seeing a solid increase in requests for mobile web design and that will only continue. Smashing Magazine wrote an excellent post on mobile web design tips and trends earlier this year that I wanted to touch on it.

A Different View For Mobile Web Design
It’s not hard to notice that you have less screen to work with.  With this, you have to change how you look at web design for mobile devices like Blackberrys and iPhones.  This leads to the two most important aspects of mobile web design:

1. Clean – With mobile web design less is more.  Less graphics, no flash, clean code, semantic structure and plenty of white space is a must. Things need to center around simple with the mobile web and anything less than clean, will be ignored or not used.

2. Meaningful – Once you simplify and consider the limitations you quickly understand your mobile web content must be meaningful.  In stripping down the visuals and even the amount of content, you need to understand what will be most important for your mobile web users.  Store locations, directions, hours, recent news are all examples of what might be meaningful content.  Prioritizing your content and users needs will make your mobile website valuable and visited often.

Of course there are technical aspects that need to be considered from domain structure to mobile browser detection, but with a clean and mean approach you can create a mobile experience worth experiencing.
